Massage & Candle Safety

“Don’t mind if I light candles, I like to watch us play…”

Janet Jackson ~ That’s The Way Love Goes

Candles create an atmosphere conducive for any romantic situation, especially during massages and love making. Watching the light from the flame flicker and dance on the skin of your partner can be a stimulating experience and create an erotic mood for both of you.

For safety reasons, though, I don’t recommend burning candles during your massage sessions. A romantic massage can turn into foreplay and before you know it, the two of you have left the massage table and moved to the bed. It is easy to forget about blowing out the candles and now you have a potential fire hazard.

Risks Associated With Burning Candles

Often ignored risks of fire due to burning candles is allowing pets to get too close to burning candles. Some pet owners place no restrictions on their animals. Pets have total run of the house. Allowing pets into the bedroom during a massage and having candles burning on an end table or on the floor for ambiance leaves room for a cat or dog to walk past and knock the candle over.

Statistics For Candle Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association’s website, “from 2012-2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 8,200 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. These fires caused an annual average of 80 deaths, 770 injuries and $264 million in direct property damage.”

An evening of senual relaxation, fun, and possibly love making shouldn’t end with injury or death. Of course, people are going to do as they please. I can only give my opinion on the subject, however if you insist on using candles there are some steps to take to minimize your risk.

What To Do To Minimize Accidents With Candles

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended. Don’t leave the room while burning a candle.
  • Keep burning candles away from drafty areas or open windows.
  • Set a reminder on your smartphone to blow out the flame and reset the reminder if the massage goes longer than anticipated.
  • Keep children and pets far away from candles and do not light the candles until children and pets have been removed from the area you will be performing the massage.
  • Make sure candles are at least 12 inches or 31 centimeters away from flammable objects (curtains, massage tables, rugs, mattresses and clothes).
  • Place candles in/on a candle holder made of non flammable material
  • Be extra vigilant during the month of December as most candle fires are in the last month of the year.
  • Try using a safer candle alternative. Scentsy is a company that makes wax that burns from the heat of a light bulb in creatively designed warmers. Try using them instead of burning wax candles. My favorite scent from them is Baked Apple Pie! (Although I do own several warmers, I only use them for the minimal light they cast in a massage room. I do not warm the wax. Some people prefer a darker room and the light from the Scentsy is sufficient and for aromatherapy I prefer all natural essential oils.
  • Don’t use candles during your massage.
